Altidore to Villareal

New York Red Bulls striker Jozy Altidore is headed to La Liga outfit Villreal. The 18-year-old is on his way at an MLS record transfer fee worth just under $10 million. This is almost double of the previous record fee when Sunderland bought Claudio Reyna for $5.7 million in 2001.

Altidore will follow in the footsteps of Freddy Adu, with Benfica, and Eddie Johnson, with Fulham, after both were transferred last year. More and more bright young stars from the U.S. are going abroad and things are looking up for U.S. soccer, but will it continue? Will Jozy Altidore flourish in Spain? Can these young stars start producing for their country at an international level?
